Non-verbal

It is important that all healthcare staff take every opportunity to communicate effectively with patients. Whilst this can seem time consuming, effective communication usually leads to better engagement, reduced anxiety, and more effective care.

The simple example of a patient being able to tell a nurse that they need to use the bedpan quickly, rather than finding out that a full bed sheet change is needed highlights the importance of simple communication for staff, but more importantly for the patient’s dignity, comfort and anxiety.

Whilst Speech & Language therapists are the experts, the role of the multidisciplinary team is increasingly recognised as vital in improving the quality and effectiveness of communication. For example, splints and strengthening exercises can help patients use physical communication tools and optimal timing procedures and weaning periods (from a ventilator) can save energy for communication for when a patient's family are with them.
