Electrolarynx

An electronic larynx (electrolarynx) is a hand-held battery-operated machine that produces sound that recreates a voice (Fig 1). There are many different makes and types, but they are usually about the size of a small electric razor.

The machine makes a buzzing sound and when held against the neck, these vibrations can make audible sounds. The patient moves their tongue and mouth and forms the sounds into words.

Not everyone uses an electrolarynx in the same way. You have already heard Malcolm talking with his electrolarynx. In the video in Fig 2, Malcolm explains how he finds the 'sweet spot' under his jaw for the best sound.

Even if you have a TEP valve fitted, some patients prefer to use an electrolarynx for some or all of the time.
