The images in Figs 1 - 4 illustrate tracheostomy and laryngectomy stomas. It can be really difficult to tell what the anatomical airway connections are, and knowing this is vitally important. Can you tell the difference?

Figs 2 and 3 show tracheostomy stomas, Figs 1 and 4 show laryngectomy stomas.
As you can see it is very hard to tell the difference on visual inspection alone. You might be able to appreciate that the larynx is missing from between the chin and the stoma in Fig 4, whilst it is still visible in Fig 2. A tracheostomy tube can be inserted into either a laryngectomy end stoma or a tracheostomy. When the neck is dressed, as in figure 3, it is even harder to tell the difference.
Look for clues, like a bedhead sign, or medic alert bracelet and of course, ask the patient and their family.
