  • Stay sutures (Fig 2):
    • Extend from inside stoma and taped to chest
    • Assist with opening stoma during the 1st week
    • Raise trachea to skin's surface and pull stoma apart so a tube can be inserted
    • Tapes will be labelled 'left' and 'right'
    • Are removed after first tube change
    • Can be used in emergency to open stoma
  • Maturation sutures
