Tracheostomies are artificial airways inserted into the front of the necks of patients for a variety of indications. They can be temporary or permanent. Laryngectomy involves a permanent change to the airway.
The anatomical and physiological changes, along with the knowledge, skills and equipment required to safely manage these patients, can have a significant impact on patients and their families.
Critical incidents have been reported where crucial knowledge of airway anatomy or tracheostomy equipment were lacking, leading to harm and even death in this vulnerable patient group.
This session covers the anatomy and procedures that create 'neck breathers' along with some of the common types of tracheostomy tubes you may encounter. We also discuss indications for tracheostomy and laryngectomy and some of the essential information that needs to be immediately available to you in an emergency.
